UZI
Developed by Uziel Gal a captain of the Israeli army the UZI is a submachine gun which first appeared during the 1950′s. Used first during the Sinai War of 1956 the UZI turned out to be a highly reliable and accurate weapon. Later during the 1960s the weapon was licenced by the Belgian firearms company and it was at this point that a new metal stock was developed to replace the wooden stock that the part of the original design.
The original manufacturer of the UZI the IMI (Israel Military Indutries) developed a number of different styles of UZI such as the MIni and Micro and also a semi automatic version of the Micro UZI called the Uzi Pistol. Over time there have been further customised version of the gun that have appeared although none of which are as popular as the originals.
The UZI has become a familiar and well known weapon over the years thanks to it’s regular appearance in action movies and is a common weapon that appears in many war style video games such as the popular Call Of Duty series of games.
Fast forward to today the UZI is still being produced although now by the IWI (Israel Weapon Industries) which is a privatised version of the original IMI.
UZI Submachine Gun
Moving onto the design of the UZI it is an open bolt, blowback operated submachine gun. The UZI is famous for being one of the first weapons to use a telescoping bolt design which meant that the magazine ammo could be stored in the pistol itself allowing for a smaller and shorter weapon.
The Uzi has been exported to over 90 countries during its life and from the 1960s through the 1980s the UZI was sold to more military and police than any other SMG ever made, quite an accolade.
